He is a graduate of Tulane University in New Orleans and is a post-graduate scholar. Montgomery has a wealth of experience in ministry as well as more than forty-five years working in Education, Mental Health, and Social Services. He and his wife, Elleanor, have been married for more than forty-one years, and they have three adult children, Keosha, Courtney, and George, Jr.
