Laia Jufresa creció en el bosque de la niebla de Veracruz y pasó su adolescencia en París. Cuando en 2001 se mudó a la Ciudad de México descubrió que no sabía cruzar la calle. Desde entonces escribe narrativa. Es autora del libro de cuentos El esquinista, el libro álbum La apuesta y el audiolibro Veinte, veintiuno.
Umami fue su primera novela. Se ha traducido a nueve idiomas. En el festival de Primeras novelas de Francia, en 2016, se le votó como la mejor primera novela en español de ese año.
