by John D. Rose (Author)
Ed Schieffelin, his brother Al, and their partner Richard Gird, are legendary names in the story of Tombstone A.T. They formed a partnership that was at the core of Tombstone's discovery, and they left behind a remarkable record of testimony in Garner vs. Gird. This key lawsuit brought so many insights into the founding of Tombstone, and yet, their testimonies have never before been available to the public to read line by line, until now. In Tombstone's Founders and Pioneers Speak, author John D. Rose has published scans of the actual court recorded testimony along with related images and information, offering a glimpse into Tombstone's early beginnings that has never before been available. But the Schieffelins and Gird are not alone in this all important historical record, and J.B. Allen, Jim Burnett, The Corbin Brothers, Tombstone's first Mayor William Harwood, also offer testimony that can be read in its entirety here for the first time ever. Former Tombstone Marshal Virgil Earp also makes a brief appearance as well. The cover of this book comes from one of the many original Fly photos contained in the collections of John D. Rose.
Author Biography
A native of southeastern Arizona, John Rose has dedicated decades to the research and study of the vivid history that surrounds his home, in Cochise County. Mr. Rose has been published in the nation's top-selling western history magazine, has appeared in Arizona Highways magazine and television, and has been interviewed by Voice of America. As a nationally known expert of Cochise County history, he has published ground breaking articles extensively on his internet site known as Wyatt Earp Explorers.com. This critically acclaimed website has the largest readership of any Tombstone and Earp related site in the world. Rose's personal antique collection is one of the key Tombstone, Earp, and Charleston inventories, extending into the Arizona Territory, Geronimo, and the Apache Wars. It includes original documents and photos, saloon equipment, personal possessions of noted characters of those colorful times, and many other items. As he has said before, "If you want to understand America, you have to come to the West; if you want to understand the West, you have to come to this [The San Pedro River] Valley." His first book, Charleston and Millville A.T. Hell on the San Pedro is a critically acclaimed commercial success, as was his second book, On the Road to Tombstone: Drew's Station, Contention City, Fairbank, and his third which was San Pedro River Water Wars in the Post Drew's Station Era. Now author John D. Rose publishes the complete testimony of many of Tombstone's founders and early pioneers here for the first time.
