Realizó una estancia de investigación en la Washington University St. Louis, en Misuri, Estados Unidos. Es expresidente de la Sociedad Mexicana de Nutrición y Endocrinología. Actualmente es miembro de la Comisión Lancet para mitigar el impacto de la diabetes. Editor asociado de Atherosclerosis y de BMJ Open Diabetes Research and Care. Autor de más de 490 artículos publicados en revistas internacionales de alto impacto. En 2018 recibió el Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes, otorgado por el gobierno de México.
