For 150 years Germany has surpassed many other countries in economic prowess despite devastating wars, political strife, and shrinking territory and natural resources. Why? Perhaps it's because of the psychology and culture of the German people. Wieland shows that simplistic explanations are wrong. The German people are not workaholics, working longer hours than others. Nor is achievement motivation higher among Germans. Several personality syndromes seem very important. Author Biography

George F. Wieland holds a B.A. in psychology from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in psychology and sociology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He has taught and conducted research at Michigan, Vanderbilt, and Guy's Hospital Medical School in London, England. He has written several books on hospital and organizational cultures. His latest books on Germans are Celtic Germans: The Rise and Fall of Ann Arbor's Swabians, Stubborn & Liking It: Einstein & Other Germans in America, and Escape from Hell: German Voices. Originally from New York City, he currently lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
