The information in this book is based entirely on the eyewitness accounts in the National Archives and not on the newspaper accounts of 1865. The eyewitness accounts are far different than the newspaper accounts and for this reason were kept from the public by the U.S. Army until 1965 when they became available in the National Archives. The newspaper accounts of 1865 were based entirely on what Joseph Holt told them and could best be labeled "fake news."
