After graduation from the University of Virginia School of Nursing, she eventually was licensed in six states as she followed her husbands when they made career changes. Betty never gave up the ambition to write and she attended classes in Creative writing, English, History and other subjects not offered in Nursing school, at the University of Alabama both in Huntsville and in Tuscaloosa as well as writer's workshops whenever they were available. After retiring from Nursing, Betty pursued oil painting as a hobby, taking classes from the more prominent artists in her hometown.
