Some try to give rules to govern human behaviour, and others state the repercussions of deviating from the behavioural norms of the group. In days gone by, our proverbs were much used by our ancestors in everyday life, to teach children, and help kinsmen, to conform to the norms of the group. That, however, is dying out, and the present generation, especially the many who have emigrated, are forgetting this part of our culture and language. Daphne Pratt has been collecting Krio proverbs for well over thirty years, and has now written them down so that our children and future generations will not lose this rich part of our heritage.
Author Biography
Daphne Barlatt Pratt was born in 1943 in Freetown, Sierra Leone. She attended the Annie Walsh Memorial School in Freetown, and proceeded to the UK where she got her MA from Aberdeen University in 1966, and a postgraduate Certificate of Education from Maria Grey College, which is affiliated to London University. She was Head Teacher of a number of schools including the International School Ltd., and retired as the first principal of Limount College, a private secondary school founded in 1996. She wrote "Masire", a play in Krio which was performed in Freetown in December 2006, and "Salon Na Wi Yon", a collection of Krio poems published in 2008. She is married to L. J. Tani Pratt, and they have two daughters and three grandchildren.
