En los primeros cinco capítulos se dan los conocimientos básicos de Química General y Orgánica necesarios para comprender los fenómenos químicos asociados a la problemática ambiental. Los temas tratados en los capítulos siguientes son la toxicidad de los elementos químicos, la radiactividad, las radiaciones ionizantes y sus efectos biológicos. Al estudiar el fenómeno de la radiactividad, se describen los principales tipos de radiaciones ionizantes y sus interacciones con la materia. Se exponen también conceptos de protección radiológica y se analiza el ciclo del combustible nuclear, así como los accidentes nucleares más importantes. El autor describe la atmósfera y el suelo en cuanto a su composición, problemas ambientales, características y deterioro. También clasifica los recursos hídricos y su deterioro. El último capítulo está dedicado a los problemas ambientales, tales como el deterioro de la capa de ozono, la precipitación ácida y el incremento de efecto invernadero. Algunos de los temas fueron abordados desde una perspectiva histórica con el fin de ubicar temporalmente al lector. También se puso énfasis en el uso del Sistema Internacional de Unidades y en la etimología de los términos científicos. Es importante la advertencia del autor sobre el mal uso de la terminología técnica y científica que s el r aun en ámbitos científicos, sobre todo debido a una mala traducción del idioma inglés
Ricardo Pasquali es Ingeniero Químico y periodista científico. Realizó cursos de post-grado en "Protección Radiológica y Seguridad Nuclear" (Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica, Ministerio de Salud Pública y Medio Ambiente y Universidad de Buenos Aires), "Aspectos químicos de la contaminación ambiental" y "Ambiente, producción y utilización de alimentos" (Universidad de Buenos Aires). Actualmente se desempeña como profesor asociado de Química Ambiental en el Departamento de Biología de la Universidad CAECE.
