Gerhard Rohlfs (1831-1896) war ein deutscher Afrikareisender und Schriftsteller. Rohlfs ging als offiziell unterst tzter Forschungsreisender erneut nach Tripolis, um von dort (Abreise Mai 1865) das Hoggar-Massiv zu erforschen und nach Timbuktu weiterzuziehen. Schon in Ghadames musste er seine Marschrichtung wegen des feindlichen Verhaltens der Tuareg ndern. Er zog ber Murzuk im Fessan und Bilma im Kaouar-Tal am Tschad-See vorbei nach Kuka, der Hauptstadt des Reiches Bornu. Mit Unterst tzung des Sultans von Bornu gelangte er von dort an den Benue, den er bis zur Einm ndung in den Niger bei Lokoja befuhr. ber Ilorin und Ibadan erreichte er im Mai 1867 Lagos am Golf von Guinea. Rohlfs hatte damit nicht nur als einer der ersten Europ er die gesamte Sahara durchquert, seine Reise vom Mittelmeer an die westafrikanische K ste wurde als die zweite europ ische Afrikadurchquerung berhaupt gefeiert. Dies war zuvor nur dem Engl nder David Livingstone gegl ckt. In Berlin wurde er von K nig Wilhelm I. von Preu en empfangen und zum Ehrenmitglied der Berliner Gesellschaft f r Erdkunde ernannt. Er erhielt die goldenen Medaillen der geographischen Gesellschaften von Paris und London. Rohlfs beschreibt in seinem Werk "Quer durch Afrika" sehr anschaulich die Praxis des Sklavenhandels, dessen erkl rter Gegner er war. Dennoch behandelte er in Murzuk einen erkrankten Sklavenh ndler aus Kordofan. Aus Dank f r seine Genesung schenkte dieser Rohlfs einen jungen Sklaven, der etwa 7 oder 8 Jahre alt war. Dies war am 25. Dezember 1865. Rohlfs gab ihm den Namen Henry No l. Da Rohlfs den Jungen nicht allein zur cklassen wollte, begleitete er Rohlfs auf seiner weiteren Reise. Rohlfs nahm ihn sp ter mit nach Berlin, wo ihn der Deutsche Kaiser Wilhelm I. auf seine Kosten erziehen lie .
