Los ensayos de este libro tienen una naturaleza bifocal que responde al mismo tiempo a condiciones políticas y a sucesos intelectuales. Cualquiera sea el tema en discusión, siempre mantuve un ojo puesto en los debates teóricos y el otro en las prácticas políticas reales o posibles. En otras palabras, intenté mantener en vista al mismo tiempo los diferentes puntos de vista del teórico y del agente político, para no reducir el uno al otro. Por ejemplo, como partidaria del movimiento feminista y participante de él, insistí en hacer responsables a los nuevos paradigmas teóricos por las exigencias de la praxis política; al mismo tiempo, como teórica social crítica, intenté evaluar la viabilidad de formas alternativas de praxis a la luz de los resultados de la reflexión teórica.
Ese doble objetivo se refleja en el carácter y el estilo de mi redacción. Dichos ensayos son abstractos y teóricos y sin embargo manifiestan un acento de urgencia que denota compromiso. Por un lado, escribo como teórica social educada como filósofa e influida por los cambios recientes de la teoría literaria, la teoría feminista y los estudios culturales. Por el otro, escribo como socialista democrática y feminista. En general, intenté la proeza difícil pero no imposible de escribir con un pie en la profesión académica y el otro en el movimiento social. Por ende, incluso los ensayos con más impertérrito tono teórico son respuestas a problemas generados en la praxis política y sólo posibles de resolver mediante ella; e incluso los ensayos con un ostensible carácter más impersonal se desarrollaron a partir de dilemas existenciales y conflictos personales y políticos.
