Su lenguaje se abre a la experimentaci?n, con diversos registros y con la peculiaridad de plasmar po?ticamente una suerte de proceso an?mico herm?tico, a la vez que cargado de reclamo de las libertades del individuo.
En su primer periodo escribe Los heraldos negros (1918), con algunos poemas de logros expresivos notables. Despu?s, m?s influido por las corrientes art?sticas y literarias vanguardistas, Vallejo escribir? un libro que a?n hoy sigue causando admiraci?n: Trilce (1922). P?stumamente aparecieron Espa?a, aparta de m? este c?liz (1939), libro de tono admonitorio contra la injusticia ante la evidencia de la derrota republicana, Poemas en prosa (1928-1938), Poemas humanos (1932-1937), y otros versos aparecidos en antolog?as. De ellos, y junto a Trilce, quiz? es Poemas humanos el que contiene los poemas m?s representativos de su innovador registro po?tico, as? como de su peculiar visi?n social y humana, de rasgos apocal?pticos y desesperanzados respecto al tipo de sociedad alienada e injusta que ve?a aproximarse.
Los Poemas humanos de C?sar Vallejo, fueron escritos entre 1931 y 1937, y publicados en Par?s en 1939 por Georgette Vallejo, viuda del poeta, junto a los Poemas en prosa y Espa?a, aparta de m? este c?liz. Tras la edici?n parisina de 1939 aparecieron otras ediciones: Poes?as completas. 1918-1938, con recopilaci?n, pr?logo y notas de C?sar Mir? (Buenos Aires, Editorial Losada, 1949). Y en 1968, Georgette public? la Obra po?tica completa, junto a los manuscritos originales en facs?miles; all? fueron organizados los poemas p?stumos de Vallejo en el orden siguiente:
Poemas en prosa (1923-1929),
Poemas humanos (1931-1937), y
Espa?a, aparta de m? este c?liz (1937)
En 1988 apareci? otra edici?n de la poes?a de Vallejo, bajo el t?tulo de C?sar Vallejo. Obra po?tica, edici?n cr?tica coordinada por Am?rico Ferrari que opt? por agrupar los poemas p?stumos de Vallejo (Poemas de Par?s) bajo los ep?grafes de Poemas p?stumos I y Poemas p?stumos II.
Sin embargo, la distribuci?n impuesta por la edici?n de Francisco Moncloa Editores, de 1968, sigue siendo la m?s citada.
