We take this model of commemorating saints from Jesus Himself who says about the woman who anointed his feet at Bethany: 'Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her' Matthew 26:13 The Commemoration of the Saints in the Liturgy serves to live out this purpose of providing a memorial of those who anointed the feet of Christ through the sweet offering of their lives. The purpose of this memorial as St Paul says is ultimately to help us to look 'unto Jesus' and His endurance of the cross and His ultimate victory, which He likewise promises to us.
