Henri Charrière nació en Saint-Étienne-de-Lugdarès, Francia, el 16 de noviembre de 1906, y murió en Madrid el 29 de julio de 1973. Huérfano de padre desde 1917, se alistó en la Armada Francesa en 1923. Allí sirvió durante dos años, y, a su regreso, se casó y se adentró en la vida de los bajos fondos parisinos. El 26 de octubre de 1931 es condenado a trabajos forzados en cadena perpetua por el asesinato del proxeneta Roland le Petit, un crimen que él siempre negó haber cometido.
