Por el contrario, los herejes de su época, para validar sus propias afirmaciones, recurrieron al tenebroso argumento de un supuesto testimonio secreto de Jesús, confiado a supuestos apóstoles del círculo íntimo y que se creía desaparecido.
Hoy, la polémica abierta en tiempos de Ireneo, ha vuelto a la máxima actualidad debido al hallazgo en Egipto de una versión copta (siglo III o IV) de uno de esos textos gnósticos desaparecidos y de que solo se tenían noticias por las citas y condenas que del mismo hace el propio Ireneo. Se trata del llamado Evangelio de Judas, un texto apócrifo del siglo II, que Ireneo atribuye a la secta gnóstica de los cananítas, y cuya restauración, traducción y difusión masiva abrió una importante polémica y causado no poca confusión a muchas personas no expertas en la materia.
