by David Parker (Photographer), Ibrahim Al-Koni (Author), Marina Warner (Text by (Art/Photo Books))

Myths and legends have often been inspired and shaped by geologic landforms and, similarly, British photographer David Parker uses the natural world as an arena for the personal exploration of new mythic, symbolic, and metaphoric motifs.

Myths and Landscape brings together images from Sirens and New Desert Myths, two larger projects created in parallel and sharing a common esthetic. For Parker, the siren song is a call to contemplation, and his pictures chart many fascinated encounters with an enchanted world of forgotten archetypes, further exploring the tension between the temporal and eternal in our secular age.

Author Biography

David Parker (b. 1949) lives and works in Surrey, UK. His work is housed in many important corporate art collections such as Citibank, N. M. Rothschild & Sons, Goldman Sachs, as well as public and private collections and has been shown at many international venues.

Ibrahim al-Koni was born in Libya in 1948. A Tuareg who writes in Arabic, he spent his childhood in the desert and learned to read and write Arabic when he was twelve. Today he is one of the most prolific Arabic novelists. In 2010, he received the Arab Novel Award and dedicated the value of the prize to the children of the Tuareg tribes from which he originally hails. He has lived in Switzerland since 1993, and authored over 50 novels, short stories, poems and aphorisms, all inspired by the desert. Some works have been translated into 35 languages.

Marina Sarah Warner, CBE, FBA FRSL (born 1946) is a British novelist, short story writer, historian and mythographer. Holder of 12 honorary degrees and two honorary fellowships, Warner is a Fellow of the British Academy and of the Royal Society of Literature. She has judged the The Jerwood Drawing Prize and the Turner Prize; she is a regular broadcaster on the BBC, and has taught and given lectures worldwide, including the National Gallery and ICA, London and the Prado in Madrid; she has delivered the Presidential Lecture at Stanford University and the Carpenter Lecture at Harvard. She has been awarded a CBE, Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, France and Commendatore dell'Ordine della Stella di Solidareità, Italy. Warner is a winner of the Aby Warburg Prize and a Getty Scholar.
