En la Memoria secreta presentada al rey Carlos III por S.E. el conde de Aranda, sobre la independencia de las colonias inglesas, despu?s de haber firmado el tratado de Par?s de 1783, se aconseja al rey Carlos III de Espa?a:
deshacerse de todas las posesiones que tiene sobre el continente de las dos Am?ricas, conservando solamente las islas de Cuba y Puerto Rico en la parte septentrional, y alguna otra que pueda convenir en la parte meridional, con el objeto de que pueda servirnos de escala de dep?sito para el comercio espa?ol.

V?anse aqu? trazadas en compendio las causas verdaderas de independencia de las colonias espa?olas. Lo ?nico que les faltaba para realizar sus deseos era una coyuntura favorable, y ?sta se les present? con la invasi?n de Espa?a por las tropas francesas en 1808. As? fue que desde entonces se empez? a descomponer el edificio g?tico colonial y algunas de las columnas que lo sustentaban se desplomaron, aun antes de haberse publicado la Constituci?n de 1812.
