En el 2021, Melissa fue honrada en la lista 30 menores de 30 de Forbes en el área de las ciencias y en la lista de InStyle "50 Badass Women". Melissa posee una Licenciatura en Ecología Marina y Conservación de el New College de la Florida y una Maestría en Biología Marina de la Universidad de Victoria en Nueva Zelanda.
