Los ríos profundos, de José María Arguedas, narra el proceso de aprendizaje de Ernesto. Es un muchacho de catorce años, que se enfrenta a las injusticias del mundo adulto, en el que debe elegir su futuro.
Ernesto es hijo de un abogado errante, siempre perseguido por enemigos políticos. Encuentra protección en una comunidad indígena hasta que su padre lo recoge y lo lleva consigo de pueblo en pueblo. Finalmente lo interna, en Abancay, en un colegio de religiosos.
Desde ese momento Ernesto describe recuerdos del pasado -de los diversos poblados indígenas- y la etapa de su vida en el colegio, cuyo ambiente es sombrío y muchas veces repugnante.
El desarrollo del argumento pasa evoca primerola época anterior al internado. Luego se describe la toma de conciencia de un Ernesto adulto que debe escoger entre el mundo andino y la clase hacendada.
La personalidad ambivalente del protagonista de Los ríos profundos, su pertenencia real a la clase de los blancos y su identificación con la cultura indígena, hacen del relato uno de los más desgarradores dentro de las letras hispanoamericanas. De la misma manera, la excelencia del lenguaje utilizado por el autor, también entrelaza estos dos mundos.
En ocasiones su estilo traduce al español el habla peculiar del indio. Esta recreación estética, demuestra la maestría de Arguedas como narrador, y justifica su lugar de referencia entre los más importantes escritores latinoamericanos.
