Alejo Carpentier fue un novelista y musicólogo cubano. Reflejando su intenso compromiso con la política revolucionaria, sus novelas exploran los elementos irracionales del mundo latinoamericano, así como su variedad de culturas, y la posibilidad de su transformación. Reconocido como uno de los mejores escritores latinoamericanos modernos, Carpentier también fue un importante teorista de la literatura de la región e historiador de su música. Leonardo Padura (Habana, Cuba, 1955) es novelista, periodista, y guionista.
