Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada, m s conocida por el nombre de Santa Teresa de Jes s o simplemente Teresa de vila ( vila, 28 de marzo de 1515 - Alba de Tormes, 4 de octubre de 1582), fue una religiosa, doctora de la Iglesia Cat lica, m stica y escritora espa ola, fundadora de las carmelitas descalzas, rama de la Orden de Nuestra Se ora del Monte Carmelo (o carmelitas). El Libro de la Vida se redact en periodos sucesivos y con finalidades distintas, aunque el periodo de redacci n definitivo suele situarse entre 1562-1566. La Santa lo escribi por mandato y bajo la direcci n de sus confesores, e iba dirigido a un c rculo religioso reducido. El Libro comprende hasta sus 50 a os de edad y lo escribe durante una de las etapas m s dif ciles de su vida. En los primeros cap tulos Santa Teresa aporta gran cantidad de informaci n autobiogr fica sobre su vida familiar, su infancia, y su ingreso en la vida religiosa. A lo largo del libro hay otros episodios de este tipo: sus referencias al Santo fray Pedro de Alc ntara, a quien conoci personalmente, y el proceso que le llev a la fundaci n del primer monasterio reformado de San Jos de Avila, se encuentran entre las m s memorables. Pero en su mayor parte el Libro de la Vida narra su progreso espiritual y sus vivencias m sticas, as como su pr ctica y concepci n de la oraci n, escrito en su particular estilo anal tico y enormemente sincero. Por esto se ha calificado a la obra como "autobiograf a introspectiva".
