He has degrees from Oxford and Edinburgh and is a member of the RSE Young Academy of Scotland. His publications include Radicalism, Reform and National Identity, 1820-1833 (2008), Spirit of the Union: Popular Politics in Scotland, 1815-1820 (2011) and a large number of articles in journals including the English Historical Review, Historical Journal, Journal of British Studies, Past & Present and the Scottish Historical Review.
