Author Biography
Oswaldo Payá Sardiñas (La Habana, 1952-2012). Intelectual y líder cívico cubano, profesor de Física e Ingeniero en Telecomunicaciones. En 1988 fundó el Movimiento Cristiano Liberación, que en mayo de 2002 entregó a la Asamblea Nacional cubana las 11.020 firmas necesarias en apoyo al Proyecto Varela: una iniciativa ciudadana para solicitar un referendo a favor de las libertades fundamentales del individuo y en contra del régimen totalitario cubano. En octubre de 2003 el MCL, a pesar de la represión del régimen castrista, logró entregar otras 14.000 firmas al parlamento nacional. Fue el ganador del Premio Sájarov 2002 del Parlamento Europeo a la Libertad de Conciencia. En el 2005 se le otorgó el título de Doctor en Leyes Honoris Causa por la Universidad de Columbia, Nueva York. Fue nominado cinco veces al Premio Nobel de la Paz. El domingo 22 de julio de 2012 fue asesinado junto a su joven colaborador Harold Cepero Escalante (1980-2012), en un atentado ejecutado por la Seguridad del Estado del régimen cubano.
