Kon-tiki fue el nombre de la balsa utilizada por el explorador noruego Thor Heyerdahl (1914-2002) en su expedici n de 1947 por el oc ano Pac fico desde Sudam rica hasta la Polinesia. El nombre de la embarcaci n se deb a al dios solar de los incas, Viracocha, de quien se dec a que antiguamente hab a llevado el nombre de Kon-Tiki. Kon-Tiki es tambi n el nombre del libro que escribi Heyerdahl sobre su experiencia. Heyerdahl sosten a que pobladores procedentes de Sudam rica podr an haber llegado hasta la Polinesia ya en tiempos precolombinos. El prop sito de Heyerdahl era demostrar la posibilidad de que el poblamiento de la Polinesia se hubiese llevado a cabo por v a mar tima, desde Am rica del Sur, en balsas id nticas a la usada durante la expedici n y movidas nicamente por las mareas, las corrientes y la fuerza del viento, que es casi constante, en direcci n este-oeste, a lo largo del Ecuador. No obstante, la expedici n dispuso de ciertos elementos como una radio, relojes, mapas, sextantes y cuchillos, aunque los mismos no fueron relevantes a la hora de probar que una balsa como la utilizada pod a realizar la traves a. La expedici n Kon-Tiki fue financiada mediante pr stamos y cont con donaciones de parte del ej rcito de Estados Unidos. Heyerdahl viaj tiempo antes a Per , donde, junto con un peque o grupo de personas y dentro del espacio provisto por las autoridades nacionales, se dedic a la construcci n de la balsa. Para ello, se emplearon troncos de madera balsa y otros materiales aut ctonos, y se mantuvo el estilo de construcci n ind gena tal como se observ en las ilustraciones dejadas por los conquistadores espa oles. La traves a comenz el 28 de abril de 1947. Heyerdahl y otros cinco integrantes viajaron durante 101 d as a lo largo de casi 7000 km por el oc ano Pac fico, hasta llegar a un arrecife en el atol n de Raroia, en las islas Tuamotu, el 7 de agosto de 1947. Toda la tripulaci n lleg a tierra sana y salva.
