Kahler sees this as a parallel to the parricidal rejection of the Jews by the Christian church. His argument is deepened in an added chapter, new to this volume, on the major forms and features of anti-Judaism, 'in which the earlier theme of the universal and the specific are seen as central not only to the inner history of Judaism but also to the specific interaction of Jews and Gentiles throughout social history.
Author Biography
Erich Kahler was internationally known for his distinguished contributions to the philosophy of history and sociology of knowledge. He authored Man the Measure: A New Approach to History; The Tower and the Abyss: An Inquiry into the Transformation of Man; and The Meaning of History. During his lifetime, Kahler held teaching posts at Cornell University, Princeton University, and Ohio State University. He was also a member of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton, and a fellow of the Leo Baeck Institute - where he lectured and where this volume first took shape.
