Ailton Krenak nació en 1953, en la región del valle del río Doce, territorio del pueblo Krenak. Es activista del movimiento socioambiental y de defensa de los derechos indígenas de Brasil. Es uno de los líderes más destacados del movimiento que surgió durante el gran despertar de los pueblos indígenas en ese país. Contribuyó, también, a la creación de la Unión de las Naciones Indígenas (UNI). Su lucha en las décadas de 1970 y 1980 fue determinante para la conquista del "Capítulo de los Indios" en la Constitución de 1988.
