La trama del relato tiene lugar en la ?poca de la Reconquista. El alcaide cristiano de ?lora, Rodrigo de Narv?ez, sale una noche de la fortaleza a patrullar con sus escuderos y capturan un prisionero: el Abencerraje, que va en busca de su amada.
Rodrigo de Narv?ez lo deja marchar tras hacerle prometer que volver? pasados tres d?as para ser su prisionero. El moro acepta, agradecido, y cumple su promesa. Vuelve a los tres d?as acompa?ado de Jarifa, su amada, con quien se ha casado a pesar de la oposici?n de su padre.
Al comprobar su honradez, don Rodrigo accede a escribir al rey de Granada para que este convenza al padre de Jarifa de que los perdone. Al final los dos enamorados pueden retornar a su tierra natal. El tema de esta obra es la generosidad de los vencedores para con los vencidos. Hace ?nfasis en la superioridad moral de los cristianos sobre el pueblo musulm?n.
La familia ?rabe de los Abencerrajes fue muy influyente en Granada durante el siglo XV. Su rivalidad con la de los Cegr?es, en constantes guerras civiles, fue decisiva en la ca?da del reino de Granada. Esta historia luego se incorpor? a Los siete libros de la Diana, de Jorge de Montemayor, en 1561.
