Diego Lopez de Cogolludo (1613-1665) nació en Alcalá de Henares en España. Tomó el hábito de San Francisco en el convento de San Diego, el 31 de marzo de 1629. Emigró a Yucatán, donde se convirtió sucesivamente en lector en teología, guardián y finalmente provincial de su orden. Es uno de los principales historiadores de Yucatán.

A su fallecimiento dejó manuscrita su amplísima Historia de Yucatán, por la que es conocido principalmente. Su elaboración la inició en 1647 y la terminó en 1656.

Su obra, la Historia de Yucatán, se publicó en Madrid en 1688, y no fue reimpresa hasta 1842 y 1867. Es un libro con información de una época en la cual las fuentes históricas más antiguas, hoy inexistentes, eran aún accesibles.

Para redactar esta Historia de Yucatán López de Cogolludo tuvo la posibilidad de estudiar muchos documentos originales sobre los conquistadores y los habitantes autóctonos de Yucatán. Entre ellos consultó y usó los escritos del Obispo Diego de Landa hasta un punto considerable. Aunque, en opinión de algunos estudiosos contemporáneos, muchas de sus afirmaciones deben ser tomadas con un cauto criticismo.

Se trató de un trabajo realizado de una manera esporádica y en medio de muchas dificultades porque, como afirma un contemporáneo suyo:


los diversos cargos que desempeñó en su orden le impedían fijar su residencia en un solo lugar y le obligaban a viajar ordinariamente llevando sus manuscritos entre su pequeño equipaje y trabajando unas veces en Mérida y otras en diversos pueblos de la provincia, entre los que él mismo enumera los conventos de Sotuta, Telkax, Izamal, Cacalchen, Motul y Oxkutcaba.


Los primeros capítulos de Historia de Yucatán relatan cómo los españoles conquistaron la Península de Yucatán y su gente, los mayas, en tres largas campañas. La primera campaña la encabezó Francisco de Montejo, en 1527. La última fue dirigida por su hijo del mismo nombre, en 1545.

El libro contiene una descripción de la tierra, costumbres y creencias del pueblo maya, que López creía que descendía del fenicio y el cartaginés. También hay varios capítulos que narran los avances de la orden franciscana en la conversión e instrucción de los mayas.
