Por primera vez se logró introducir material genético de una especie en células de otra y, además, se comprobó que la información hereditaria se transmitía correctamente. Como consecuencia de esta innovación, se consiguió, por ejemplo, que ciertas bacterias cultivadas en un laboratorio produjeran una hormona humana. Rápidamente, con esta técnica comenzó la producción de enzimas, fármacos, reactivos de diagnóstico y otras moléculas de interés industrial mediante técnicas cada vez más rápidas y mejores. Más tarde llegaron los primeros ratones transgénicos, las primeras plantas resistentes a insectos y herbicidas, y las primeras vacunas recombinantes. El siglo XX terminó con un anuncio impactante: la clonación de una oveja completa a partir de una célula de la ubre de una oveja adulta, y el nuevo milenio despertó con otro anuncio sorprendente: se completó el borrador y, después, una versión más acabada de la secuencia del genoma humano, es decir, del conjunto de genes que tienen las células humanas.
