De acuerdo con esa interpretación, para contrarrestar tal enseñanza Pablo en su carta afirma que la salvación es por la gracia y que es un error enseñar que es por las obras. Quienes mantienen esta posición respecto a la carta sostienen que la idea central del texto es que la justificación es por la fe y no por las obras.
Es cierto que Gálatas es una carta de gracia y de libertad que puede corregir tales suposiciones. Sin embargo, si pensamos que tal interpretación capta la enseñanza central de la carta y creemos que esa fue la razón por la cual Pablo la escribió, perdemos mucho de las riquezas de Gálatas y mucha de su potestad para ejercer cambios en nuestras comunidades cristianas hoy. Si suponemos que el mensaje de Gálatas no es para nosotros sino para aquellos que no entienden correctamente la doctrina de la salvación por la gracia, perdemos la posibilidad de beneficiarnos mucho de este texto bíblico.La razón por la cual esa interpretación superficial, que no capta ni la profundidad ni el poder radical de la carta a los Gálatas, es tan popular, es que por siglos la mayoría de la s iglesias protestantes han leído Gálatas a través de la visión de Martín Lutero por su experiencia personal. Una muestra palpable de la manera en que la experiencia de Lutero y el individualismo juegan un papel demasiado grande en la interpretación de la carta a los Gálatas, es que muchos presumen que Pablo escribió la carta para ayudar a individuos a liberarse de su sentimiento de culpa y que Pablo definía la justificación en Cristo como el hecho de sentirse libre de tal sentimiento. Pero en toda la carta Pablo no menciona la culpa ni un sentimiento de culpa y no se enfoca en individuos sino en la colectividad. Él siempre usa la forma plural ustedes y no el singular usted. Esta es una carta dirigida a las comunidades cristianas de Galacia, no a los individuos de dichas comunidades.
