El diseñador industrial Norman Bel Geddes fue el responsable de Futurama, la Exposición Mundial que en 1939 mostró a la ciudad de Nueva York cómo sería el futuro, en concreto treinta años después. Se apostaba entonces por las carreteras de catorce carriles, los rascacielos de cuatrocientos metros de altura y las aceras elevadas por encima de las autopistas, avances quizá demasiado exigentes para los treinta años de margen que otorgaba Geddes a su desarrollo. Matt Groening duplicó la espera y, seis décadas después, se atrevió a ir un poco más lejos con su Futurama, en la que mostraba la vida de la ciudad (y de buena parte del espacio exterior) en el año 2999. Fry es un repartidor de pizzas distraído y despreocupado que acaba encerrado en una cápsula criogénica por error, un sarcófago programado para volver a abrirse pasados mil años.
