Este trabajo analiza parte de los mecanismos por los que el ej rcito nacional se convirti en una herramienta vital para la consolidaci n del poder presidencial entre 1880 y 1912, en especial la construcci n de un ordenamiento legal que transfiri al gobierno federal los servicios militares atribuidos a las provincias por la Constituci n de 1853/1860. La construcci n de ese ej rcito en un instrumento principal de control pol tico lleva a repensar los lineamientos de la historiograf a tradicional y releer el contexto en que se dictaron las leyes militares; revisar las constantes y las rupturas en los sistemas de formaci n de los cuadros y el reclutamiento; asomarse al juego de poderes e influencias arbitrado en las c pulas institucionales, pero tambi n a la trama de sociabilizaci n desarrollada por las fuerzas armadas en su relaci n con los sectores populares; examinar los mecanismos y las formas de resistencia de los poderes provinciales ante el despojo de las funciones militares a los que los someti el estado central; y mostrar c mo el jerarquizar una hip tesis de conflicto b sicamente interna y de tensi n interolig rquica determin un tipo de concentraci n espacial de los cuerpos militares pensado como un armaz n de acero del presidente.

Hugo Quinterno es profesor y licenciado en Historia por la Universidad Nacional de Luján (UNLU), profesor de Historia Política Argentina en la carrera de Ciencia Política y Relaciones Internacionales de la Universidad Abierta Interamericana (UAI), y de Historia Contemporánea y seminarios de grado en la Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA). Ha dictado conferencias y cursos, y su contribución más reciente se ha publicado en Strikes and Social Conflicts. Towards a Global History, editado en junio de 2012 por la International Association Strikes and Social Conflicts y el Instituto de História Contemporânea da Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
