thinkers who align with utilitarianism support effective altruism, and some other perspectives do as well. But the ideal of personal integrity can push the other way. So can justice-based theories of giving: perhaps I could do the most good by stealing and giving to the poor, but that would be unjust. In the most important cases, however, justice leads to the same result as effective altruism. Other theories give different results. The authors represent include intuitionism, virtue ethics, Kantian ethics, utilitarianism, theory of justice, and the ideal of personal integrity.

Paul Woodruff is Darrell K. Royal Regents Professor of Ethics at the University of Texas at Austin. He is the author of five previous books including The Ajax Dilemma: Justice, Fairness and Rewards.
