ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

*Ortega y Gasset Award for Career Journalism 2023*

The World Then is a fascinating portrait of our times, a tool for understanding what we do, who we are and, perhaps, who we will become.

The World Then is a guide for understanding the world we live in. Written -Caparrós proposes- by a twenty-second century historian, it summarizes and traces the connections between common themes in the world's main social, economic, political and cultural organization to present a general overview of society at the end of the Age of Fire.

The topics covered range from population explosion, love, the family, and the status of women to new work patterns, the emergence of AI, the power of large digital corporations and their impact on our lives, the rise of China and the decline of democracy, shifting leisure activities and eating habits, new forms of warfare, and old ways of believing in God. The narrative style is simple and accessible, supported by analyses and data that shed light on our reality from different approaches and perspectives.

This updated edition includes profiles of 25 figures who define our times, among them Putin, Messi, Elizabeth Holmes, a Mongolian herder, a Marshall Islands prince and a Bengali worker.
