Author Biography
Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson nace al 13 de noviembre de 1850 en Escocia. Cuando apenas tenía dos años, su familiar llevaba al pequeño a la iglesia donde escuchaba las prédicas historias como Caín y Abel, Libro de Daniel o el Diluvio Universal; sumado a los relatos terríficos de su niñera asustaban pero al mismo tiempo le producían fascinación. Su obra se vio fuertemente influida por experiencias infantiles tempranas. Según escribe su madre en un diario sobre él, Stevenson escribió el primer quinteto en septiembre de 1855, cuando estaba a punto de cumplir los cinco años. Durante su infancia escribía constantemente ensayos e historias. Su padre lo comprendía bien puesto que él mismo había escrito en su tiempo libre hasta que su propio padre le había dicho que dejara esa insensatez y se dedicara a los negocios. El primer libro histórico del joven Stevenson, Pentland Rising, no alcanzó gran demanda debido a su escaso valor literario pero, veinte años más tarde cuando el autor era famoso, logró el éxito nunca imaginado. El legado de Robert Louis Stevenson es una vasta obra que incluye novelas mayores, cuentos, crónicas de viaje, obras de teatro, poesía, ensayos y cartas. Murió el 3 de diciembre de 1894 en Samoa de una hemorragia cerebral.
