Michael Cunningham (1952) es uno de los autores más respetados del panorama de la ficción estadounidense actual. Nació en Cincinnati (Ohio). Se licenció en literatura inglesa en la Universidad de Stanford y en 1990 publicó A Home at the End of the World, su primera novela, cuya adaptación cinematográfica corrió a cargo de Michael Mayer. En 1995 publicó De carne y hueso y en 1999 recibió los premios Pulitzer y PEN/Faulkner por Las horas, una novela que tenía como protagonista a Virginia Woolf y que fue llevada al cine con gran éxito, gracias también al buen trabajo de Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore y Nicole Kidman, quien ganó el Oscar a la mejor actriz.
