La primera publicaci n incluye 18 relatos y en siguientes ediciones el propio autor realiza algunas modificaciones en los cuentos y excluye Los ojos sombr os, El infierno artificial y El perro rabioso. El tema de la muerte asociado al amor, a la locura y a la enfermedad resalta en la mayor a de los relatos. Por decisi n expresa del autor, el t tulo no lleva coma. Esta edici n cr tica conmemora el centenario de la obra pionera y del padre del cuento en espa ol. Respetando la edici n original de 1917 se han conservado los dieciocho cuentos, adem s de haber sido revisados, corregidos y actualizados. Author Biography
Horacio Quiroga nace el 31 de diciembre de 1878 en Salto, Uruguay. Su padre biológico muere accidentalmente cuando él tiene meses de edad y su padrastro se suicida tras sufrir un derrame que lo deja hemipléjico. En 1897 hace sus primeras colaboraciones en medios periodísticos. En 1900 viaja a París, de donde vuelve desencantado con el ambiente europeo. En 1902 mata accidentalmente, con una pistola, a su amigo Federico Ferrando. Se muda a Buenos Aires, Argentina donde trabaja como profesor de castellano y acompaña, como fotógrafo, a Leopoldo Lugones en una expedición a la provincia de Misiones. En 1906 publica su relato 'Los perseguidos', un adelanto de lo que después se conocería como literatura psicológica. En 1909 se casa con Ana María Cirés y se van a vivir a San Ignacio. Tendrán dos hijos: Eglé y Darío. En 1911 es nombrado juez de Paz. En 1915 se suicida su mujer. Regresa a Buenos Aires en 1916. En 1917 publica 'Cuentos de amor de locura y de muerte' y en 1919, 'Cuentos de la selva', libro escrito para sus hijos. En 1927 se casa de nuevo, con María Elena Bravo. En 1932 se traslada a Misiones con ella. Tiene su tercera hija, María Elena "Picota". Su mujer lo deja y vuelve a Buenos Aires, aquejado de molestias. Le acabarán diagnosticando cáncer. El 19 de febrero de 1937, aparece muerto por ingestión de cianuro en su habitación del hospital.
