La Crónica del Perú es el primer relato de la exploración y conquista de Colombia, Ecuador, Perú y Bolivia, así como la primera historia del mundo andino que se inicia en la época prehispánica. Fue escrita por Pedro Cieza de León por encargo de Pedro de la Gasca (pacificador del Perú, tras las revueltas y rebeliones desencadenadas por Gonzalo Pizarro y sus seguidores).
La Parte primera de la Crónica del Perú fue escrita entre 1540 y 1550. Se publicó en Sevilla en 1553 con una tirada de 1.100 ejemplares y al año siguiente fue necesario hacer una nueva edición, corregida en Amberes. Sin embargo, su autor, Pedro Cieza, murió el 2 de julio de 1554, y el resto de la obra permaneció inédita. En el Proemio de la primera parte de su Crónica, Cieza explica las causas que le hicieron escribir este libro.
La Crónica del Perú se divide en cuatro partes publicadas por Linkgua en tomos independientes:
Primera parte de la Crónica del Perú. Es una introducción de la obra en general. Descripción y relato de tierras y pueblos, con detalles de sus costumbres y tradiciones; siendo un documento etnográfico de los indígenas americanos, su religión y economía, sus creencias y organización.
Segunda parte. Del señorío de los yngas yupangues. Trata sobre la historia de los Incas y las dinastías del Antiguo Perú.
Tercera parte. Del descubrimiento y conquista deste reino del Perú.
Cuarta parte. Guerras civiles del Perú. Cieza pretendió escribir cinco libros para esta cuarta parte de su obra, sin embargo, solo se conocen los tres primeros (Guerra de Las Salinas, Guerra de Chupas y Guerra de Quito). Trata sobre las guerras civiles entre los conquistadores del Perú.
