Author Biography
Claribel Alegría: Nacida el 12 de mayo de 1924 en Estelí, Nicaragua, hija de Ana María Vides, salvadoreña y del Dr. Daniel Alegría, nicaragüense. Cuando Claribel tenía apenas nueve meses, sus padres, por estar en contra de la ocupación norteamericana de Nicaragua y viéndose amenazados, emigraron hacia la ciudad de Santa Ana, El Salvador. Claribel pasó su niñez y adolescencia allí pero desde entonces tuvo conciencia de tener "Patria y Matria" y se considera hasta el día de hoy "Salva-Nica". Durante la década de los treinta en San Salvador, cuando tenía apenas siete años, recuerda la masacre de los campesinos e indígenas de El Salvador, a mano del dictador Martínez. Fue un hito indeleble que la marcó para siempre y de allí viene su compromiso social con los derechos humanos. En 1943, partió becada hacia Estados Unidos y estudió Filosofía y Letras en la Universidad de George Washington. Donde conoció a Darwin "Bud" Flakoll Darwin J. Flakoll: Nació un 20 de febrero de 1923 en Wendte, Dakota del Sur. Sus padres, Arthur y Alma, ambos de origen noruego, dirigían una de las pequeñas escuelas rurales de las planicies de Dakota. Allí conoció al nieto del Jefe de los Lakota Sioux, Toro Sentado, con quien formó una estrecha amistad. Esta amistad le dio un punto de vista diferente sobre el mítico Lejano Oeste sobre el cual escribiría cuentos más tarde. Su familia emigró a San Diego, California durante la depresión y allí se graduó y ejerció periodismo. Se graduó de la Universidad de San Diego a los 19 años y se alistó en la Marina durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Sirvió tanto en el Atlántico como en el Pacífico a bordo de destructores. Al finalizar la guerra se matriculó en la Universidad de George Washington para cursar su Maestría en Historia y conoció a Claribel Alegría En 1947, Darwin J. "Bud" Flakoll y Claribel Alegría se casaron y establecieron una relación de vida y literatura, vital, logrando publicar juntos varias novelas y testimonios.
