"All beings are born into illusion, the illusion of divide stemming from desire and hate."It is part of the sixth book of the Mahabharata, probably written in the first or second centuries A.D. The author is unknown. It is a dialogue between Arjuna and Krishna in the battlefield, right before the war between the Pandavas and the Kauravas began. The fear of battle triggers a conversation through which we trace an overview of the mindset and religious experiences in India, encompassing the ways of action, devotion, and knowledge. We owe Juan Mascaró one of the most celebrated translations of the Bhagavad Gita, which we present in its Castilian version by José Manuel Albeira, along with the original Sanskrittext.
Author Biography
Juan Mascaró (1897-1987) estudió lenguas modernas y orientales en la Universidad de Cambridge e impartió cursos en distintas universidades, entre las que se cuentan la de Barcelona, la de Ceylán y la de Cambridge. Fue precisamente ahí donde tradujo la Bhagavad Gita al inglés, y logró una de las versiones más importantes y populares que se han hecho de tal obra, que él mismo adaptó al castellano. En los años siguientes dedicó su labor a la traducción de los Upanishads y del Dhammapada, lo que le valió su reputación como excepcional estudioso del sánscrito, del pali y también del esperanto.
