De brutal actualidad, narra c?mo las v?boras, representando a los seres humanos, se constituyen en amenaza para el entorno.
Al inicio de la historia una serpiente yarar? descubre la presencia de hombres en un viejo edificio deshabitado en la selva. El suceso provoca un Congreso de las V?boras para afrontar la situaci?n.
Durante el c?nclave determinan que es preciso atacar a los humanos para proteger sus vidas, siendo lo m?s conveniente matar primero a sus caballos. Solo las serpientes ?acanin? y Anaconda creen, en minor?a, que ser?a m?s efectivo atacar primero al perro que han tra?do los humanos pues este est? adiestrado para cazarlas y puede ser letal.
La disputa entre las v?boras y los hombres es en este relato de Quiroga una met?fora de la intromisi?n humana en la naturaleza y del exterminio que ello supone para la vida salvaje.
El cuento se podr?a dividir, seg?n su estructura interna, teniendo en cuenta sus once cap?tulos, de la siguiente forma:
Introducci?n: constituido por el primer cap?tulo. Se introduce al primer personaje, se presenta la ubicaci?n espacial y temporal, y se descubre la llegada del hombre a la selva.
Nudo/Desarrollo: constituido por los cap?tulos dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho, nueve y diez. En ellos se describen los planes y luchas que las v?boras realizan para vencer a los humanos y vivir en paz como originalmente lo hac?an.
Desenlace: constituido por el cap?tulo once. En ?l se relata la ?ltima lucha entre las v?boras y los humanos y la victoria de estos ?ltimos.
El t?tulo hace referencia a uno de los personajes principales de la historia, y, por lo tanto, ser?a un tipo de t?tulo ep?nimo.
