El presente trabajo naci de un proyecto que se inici para escribir la historia de los barrios de Ponce. Qu idea tan ilusa Jam s se imagin que ser a una empresa de tan grande envergadura. La extensi n territorial de Ponce hace posible que el pueblo cuente con casi una treintena de barrios. Y esto, a pesar de que a comienzos del siglo XIX pasaron a la jurisdicci n de Juana D az lugares como el Callabo, Guano, Jacaguas, Caunillas y Paso Llano. Quien consulte los documentos fiscales o censales de la administraci n municipal de aquella poca podr ver c mo, de un a o a otro, aparecen y desaparecen barrios. Y es que stos comenzaron a constituirse durante el siglo XIX pues la mayor a de ellos surgen de los antiguos hatos, cotos y criaderos que existieron durante el siglo XVIII y que a medida que avanza el tiempo se van convirtiendo en focos de nuevas comunidades. Cuando se comenz a indagar sobre la Playa se pudo constatar que la informaci n era tan vasta que bien val a la pena concentrarse exclusivamente en este barrio y dejar para luego la historia de los otros que, dicho sea de paso, habr que modificar debido a lo antes expuesto. As pues, teniendo en mente un solo objetivo result m s f cil la tarea de recopilar aquellos datos y noticias asociadas a la Playa de Ponce, por lo menos, hasta la primera d cada del siglo XX. Durante el siglo XVIII los documentos se suelen referir a la Playa bajo el nombre de Montones. A comienzos del siglo XIX aparece la Playa, obviamente, acentuando su situaci n geogr fica. Para finales de la d cada de 1820 y comienzos de la siguiente es com n leer Puerto Real. La raz n es obvia el puerto adquir a importancia por causa de la agricultura comercial que se desarrollaba en Ponce y su comarca. M s tarde, es com n usar indistintamente la Marina o la Playa. Pero, seg n parece, este t rmino de La Marina se identificaba m s con el distrito comercial donde ubicaban los almacenes, la aduana y la capitan a del puerto. Al oeste de La Marina se ubicaban sectores que se fueron urbanizando y que, en alg n momento, se refirieron a ellos como barrios de el Fuerte, el Salitral y la Boca.
