by Steve Diskin (Author)
A Few Small Details is anything but small and few, and in a way is not at all about details either, but more about the big picture of life and design. Academic, esoteric, amusing and on occasion profound, this book is a collection of lectures, conference presentations, essays and published articles by an author who has lived by design, as a professor and professional, and as a traveler to many countries on the globe. If there is any purpose to this book, it is to acknowledge the value of ideas, big and small, that inform the creative process. Hopefully, it is also an inspiration to students, teachers, designers and writers, as well as thanks and a wink to all of the colorful characters whose existence in the author's life have somehow influenced these excursions.
Author Biography
Steve Diskin earned his BA in Visual Studies and Masters in Architecture at Harvard University. He began his professional career as an architect with the firm of Kenzo Tange in Tokyo and then with the design of the HELIX clock (now in the permanent collection of National Design Museum in New York). His dual background in industrial design and architecture complemented his 13-year tenure at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, where he was professor and co-director of the masters program in industrial design. He has lectured extensively at a number of institutions, notably in Argentina, Switzerland, Germany, France, Norway, Denmark, Estonia, Poland and Turkey. Steve Diskin was a Visiting Professor at the Academy of Art, Architecture and Design in Prague and also held a similar position at the University of Ljubljana, Academy of Fine Art and Design. In April 2008, Steve Diskin completed his PhD in Architecture at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland with his dissertation on technology and urban design.
