El material de estos preludios proviene de las canciones populares que el autor cantaba, como todos los niños, en su infancia en la provincia de Santa Fe. Algunas le fueron enseñadas por su madre y otras aprendidas en los juegos infantiles. La melodía de "La flor de caña", le fue dictada en Anillaco, provincia de la Rioja y la melodía de " En un coche va la niña", le fue dictada por la Sra. Albertina Pizarro de Guastavino, en la provincia de Santa Fe.

Carlos Guastavino es una de las figuras de la música argentina más conocidas en el mundo entero. Aprendió música antes que a escribir. Debutó como pianista a los cuatro años en el Teatro Municipal con la interpretación de una composición para dúo de violín y piano escrito por la pianista Esperanza Lothringer, quien fue su mentora. Musicalizó versos consagrados como "Se equivocó la paloma" de Rafael Alberti, versión que popularizó en el mundo de habla hispana Joan Manuel Serrat con su interpretación aparecida en 1969. Del mismo modo, "La Tempranera" compuesta por el santafesino y grabada por Eduardo Falú, junto a "El Bailecito" o "La rosa y el sauce" son algunas de sus composición que sobresalen en el imaginario musical argentino. Guastavino fue un pionero de la música nacional y popular, acostumbrado a cruzarse con grandes como Atahualpa Yupanqui, Mercedes Sosa y Eduardo Falú. Murió el 29 de octubre de 2000, en la ciudad de Santa Fe, donde había nacido en el año 1912.
